Bilbys began in 1987 in Canberra, Australia, when a group of individuals (mainly firemen) formed an informal training group to pursue their goals in the sport of triathlon. The club takes its name from the bilby, an Australian marsupial (noted for its speed, cunning and agility (NOT!) according to our founding members). The club has donated money raised from our last 3 trivia nights to the Save the Bilby Fund as a show of support to our little mascot. The club has grown year after year and today boasts around 380 financial members including a strong junior contingent. Our highly successful novice program attracts around 85 new members each year looking to get into this awesome sport. Some of our members are the best in their field in the ACT, and across the country boasting at least one world champion and many placegetters at national and international level including an Ironman Japan winner. Bilbys Triathlon Club is affiliated with Triathlon ACT. The club has a consistent year round training schedule and club gear including race and training gear in the club colours of blue and yellow.
Bilbys caters for all levels and for individuals who want to improve their performance in all or a combination of the three triathlon disciplines. But all sport and no play can make for a dull club. The club also organises informal social activities on an ad hoc basis for club members and their family and friends. The success of the club depends on the contribution of its members, who are encouraged to have fun and contribute to its activities. We also run club events based more on fun than on results and past winners can be found here.
Some of our more notable achievements of the club over the years have included :- - 2nd place in 2007 (May) Australian Teams Club Championships –held in Penrith.
- 2nd place in 2006 Australian Teams Club Championships –held in Penrith.
- ACT Champion Club 2000-2003 and 1998
- 4th Australian Club Rankings 1999/2000 season
