A number of cycling sessions are held each week. These sessions are un-coached with no cost to participants. Bike sessions are mostly group rides, with different groups usually forming as long as sufficient numbers turn up. Bunch riding experience is essential. If you do not have experience riding in a bunch, please consider joining our novice program or one of the many cycling skills programs offered by cycling clubs in Canberra.
Members, casual riders, and juniors accompanied by an adult are welcome.
Rides for the following week will be listed in the club newsletter, which goes out each Sunday/Monday.
Short ride (30-40km): Wednesday 6am. There are a number of groups to cater for all speeds and abilities however you should be capable of riding at least 30km at about 25km/h at the back of a bunch. This ride leaves from Dickson Pool car park, off Cowper Street, at 6am sharp and takes place on roads which are open to normal traffic. If you are new to this ride please make yourself known to the senior rider (usually Gary Rolfe).
Mountain Biking: Friday 6am. This ride leaves from the Purple Pickle Café at ANU on Friday mornings.
Long ride (40-100km): Saturday. There are a number of groups to cater for all speeds and abilities, however you should be capable of riding at least 40km at about 25km/hr at the back of a bunch. The session is intended for people doing triathlon training, but general cyclists are welcome too. This ride leaves from ANU car park, next to Willow Oval and off North Road and takes place on roads which are open to normal traffic. This ride leaves at 7am in Summer and 8am in Winter. If you are new to this ride please make yourself known to the person organising the groups.
Rides finish sometime between 10am and midday depending on how far we go.
DISREGARD FOR THE ROAD RULES AND SAFETY OF YOUR FELLOW RIDERS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
Bilbys always adhere to all road rules and ride with an attitude of respect towards all road users. Here is a brief guide to Bilbys Bike Etiquette.
What you need:
A road worthy bike
An Australian standards approved helmet which fits well and is fastened at all time during the ride
At least one drink bottle, more for longer rides
Something to eat, especially for longer rides (such as fruit, muesli bar, lollies)
A spare tube and a puncture repair kit
A bike pump
Cash (optional- for a coffee with the group afterwards)
Identification such as a drivers licence or emergency contact information. Third party insurance such as contained in the full Triathlon Australia competing licence or through Pedal Power membership etc.
There is a toilet in the sports union building near the meeting point for those last minute pit stops.
There are car parks at the meeting point, but a easy ride from home is a good way to warm up.
Eat something for breakfast, 'bonking' (hunger flat) part way through the ride is always unpleasant.
Proper hydration is very important. Make sure you bring enough to drink!
You will probably need some food, bring it with you.
Bilbys bunches have rules, make sure you follow them.
