2016 Novice Program PDF Print Email Address *
Canberra Bilbys Triathlon Club will be offering our popular novice program again in 2016!
Are you looking to get fitter, try a new sporting challenge, take on something different or just meet some new people? Then the Bilbys Triathlon Club Novice Program could be what you are looking for.
We offer a structured 8 week fully coached training program that caters for all levels of ability, fitness and whatever goal you want to aim for. Our program is conducted in a supportive and encouraging environment and there will be no shortage of people to go to for questions and advice. We are not aiming to get you to full Ironman or even Olympic distance level in 8 weeks; although you are welcome to have a go if you want to. But we are aiming to have you be able to complete a novice distance triathlon, before you go on to the longer distances or you can continue doing novice triathlons if you like. Many of our members have come through the Novice Program, competed in their first triathlon at the end and gone on to bigger and better things such as national age group champions. You will be surprised at what you can achieve. More detail on the program is below.
Online registration is due to open in September 2016.

The Program
The Canberra Bilby’s Triathlon Club offers a great introduction into the sport of triathlon through its annual Novice Program. The Program has been running since 2000.  Since its inception, approximately 60 novices each year have become triathletes.  The novice program caters for all levels of abilities and goals, from people who have no idea about triathlons and may not have ridden a bike for 30 years, all the way through to people who are competitive runners, swimmers or cyclists looking for a new challenge.
The Program is comprised of training sessions in running, swimming and cycling designed to increase your fitness, skill level and athletic performance. The program also provides information sessions on various aspects related to the sport of triathlon, and finishes with your first novice distance triathlon in November.
The program is open to all people over the age of 18.
The Bilby’s 2016 Novice Program will commence with an information evening on Wednesday 14 September at the Southern Cross Club at Jamison and provides 8 weeks of friendly, coached training sessions. Training includes one swim squad, one cycling and two running sessions per week, with a 2nd cycling session introduced later in the program. Two specially designed transitions training sessions are also offered towards the end of the program with the aim of getting you ready for this 4th important discipline in the sport of triathlon.
Swim training
Swimming training will be on Friday mornings or evenings at CISAC or Civic Pool. These sessions are designed to get you going if you haven’t swum for a while, are new to swimming or if you are already a good swimmer, improve you ability. Either way, we will get you to the position where you can at least swim the distance required for a novice race.  If you cannot attend a Friday session you can attend one of our regular sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.
Bike Training
You will require your own bike and helmet. Road, hybrid or mountain bikes are fine.
Bike skills on Saturday afternoons from 2:00pm.
Wednesday morning bunch rides (6am to about 7:20am - these commence after a few weeks of bike skills training) followed by coffee in Dickson.
Run Training
Tuesday nights at Dickson from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. This is an intervals and running technique session.
Sunday mornings at Mount Ainslie at 8:00am followed by coffee at the War Memorial.
