The hill climbersThe hill climbers

The 2014 Baldwin-Rolfe Hill Climb was held in mild and sunny conditions at Mt Stromlo on Saturday 24 May.  Eleven Bilbys took part, with the key lessons from the morning being that participants should guess a challenging time.  The winner was the only rider to guess a faster time than they raced.

The award ceremony was conducted over coffee at Scope Café.  Our club sponsor, The Bike Shed was super generous with their donated prizes.  We had gift vouchers to go with the cash prizes for the winners and enough lucky door prizes for everyone to go home with a nice memento from the morning out.

The wooden spoon was won by Julie Quinn who was 4m 50s faster than her predicted time, flying up Stromlo on her mountain bike.

3rd with a guessing gap of 15s was Chris, 2nd with a gap of 8s was Paul and the winner for 2014 was Glen whose guess was just 2 seconds out.  See full results below.

Big thanks to Erin, Trent, Paul and Seona for organising.

Bilbys TriSuit Cake made by Seona Meharg and Beth HuberBilbys TriSuit Cake made by Seona Meharg and Beth Huber

The most prestigious event of the summer season, the Bilbys World Champs was held on Thursday 19 December in conjunction with our Christmas party!

We had 34 competitors putting down $5 and guessing their time in the hope of walking away with the cash!

Full results are listed below with our winner being the lovely Maegan Clarkson with only a 4 second gap between her guess and her actual time.  Maegan has been training and racing lots recently so all that work has paid off as 4 seconds over a 35 minute race is a very impressive margin!  There were some truly atrocious guesses further down the field but the wooden spoon (and their money back to try again next year!) goes to Steve Moore who guessed 20 minutes for the short course and then raced 14 mins 13 seconds.

Many thanks to the following people for their work making the race and the Christmas party happen:

  • Paul Barrie - our course setter and race organiser (and a previous World Champs Winner with a guess only 1 second out!!!),
  • Kim Houghton - kayaks and water support for our swimmers
  • Amy Benson, Guy Jones and Mars Barrie for running the rego, numbering and timing
  • Seona Meharg - for organising all the Christmas party food
  • Beth Huber (another previous winner and currently heading up our USA Branch) and Seona Meharg for planning and making the wonderful Bilbys cake
  • Erin Mace for her work behind the scenes organising the event.

And thanks also to our competitors and party attendees for making the event so much fun :-)

Many of you were kind enough to take photos and send them through to me.  I will put these in this article and on Facebook in the next few days.

Facebook photos are up!

Farrell Marshall Fun Run 2013 PDF Print Email Address *

The Bilbys annual club running event, the Farrell-Marshall Fun Run, was held on 3 November 2013.  A change of course from previous years saw Bilbys running around the Acton Ferry Terminal area with Hospital Hill thrown in for good measure :-)

We had 32 finishers and the full range of guesses from only a few seconds out to nearly 9 minutes out!

After the run, Bilbys headed over to New Acton for coffee and barrell prizes plus the results of the run.  Results are listed below (please note that the 4km times are adjusted to even things up with the 8km runners.  For example, being 10 seconds out over 4km is doubled to make it 20 seconds out and therefore keep things fair against the longer distance runners).

Full results are listed below with our winner being Bilbys Coach Peter Bond wth only an 11 second gap between his guess and actual run.  Well done Peter!!!  Our last place holder, Karina Joyce was awarded her money back to have another go next year (8mins 30 out, adjusted to 17 minutes as Karina did the 4km distance).

Many thanks to Paul and Erin for organising such a terrific and fun event and to our helpers on the day: Susannah, Mary, Lionel, Seona and Emma.  Thanks also to our wonderful sponsors The Runners Shop for the barrel prizes they kindly donated to the event.

The Bilbys Baldwin Rolfe Hill Climb for 2013 was held at Mount Stromlo on 27 July.  In very cold but sunny conditions, a group of Bilby riders and helpers met at the base of the Mountain to prepare for the climb.  Riders had to estimate the time it would take them to climb the mountain and then ride up without a watch or bike computer.  [However, we all still recorded our rides on our gps devices (safely out of viewing range in our back packets) for the purposes of uploading to Strava - if a workout isn't on Strava, it didn't happen :-)].  This is a prestigious event and the winner gets $100, bragging rights for a whole year plus their name engraved on the Baldwin Rolfe trophy, which lives in a glass cabinet at the Canberra Southern Cross Club in Jamison (one of our wonderful club sponsors).
